2013-14 Season Underway for KU Women’s Basketball

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s basketball began the 2013-14 season on Tuesday morning with its first official practice of the year.

The Jayhawks are coming off their second-straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. KU returns seven letterwinners from last year’s squad, including starters Chelsea Gardner and Natalie Knight. Head coach Bonnie Henrickson added five freshmen to the 2013-14 roster.

Gardner led the team with 6.9 rebounds per game last season and added 8.7 points per game. Knight is back on the court after being sidelined halfway through the 2012-13 season with a knee injury. Other returners include seniors CeCe Harper and Markisha Hawkins. Harper contributed 5.1 points per game, while Hawkins provided a spark off the bench averaging 3.9 points a game.

The 2013-14 season starts with two exhibition games, the first against Pittsburg State on Oct. 30 at 8 p.m., in Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks host 19 games at home, which include the exhibition games. KU opens the regular season on Nov. 10 against Oral Roberts.

Kansas will hold its annual media day on Oct. 2. The media-only event starts 2:30 p.m. with Henrickson’s press conference followed by one-on-one interviews with student-athletes and coaches.
