Gardner Named to Naismith Trophy Watch List

ATLANTA – Kansas women’s basketball senior Chelsea Gardner was selected to the Naismith Trophy Top 50 Watch List as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Wednesday morning.
Gardner, a native of DeSoto, Texas, is one of five Big 12 student-athletes representing four conference schools on the watch list. A Preseason All-Big 12 selection, Gardner leads the Jayhawks with 19.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game while shooting 55.1 percent from the field.
The 6-3 forward has netted a double-figure scoring performance in every game this season, including four contests knocking in 20 or more points. Gardner leads the league with three double-doubles, is third in the conference in scoring (19.3), tied for fourth in rebounds (8.0) and 12th in field goal percentage (55.1). Gardner is also third in the Big 12 in blocks per game (2.3).
Against then-No. 10 Cal, Gardner lead all scorers with 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. She also recorded a season-high five blocks that helped the Jayhawks hand the Golden Bears their first loss of the season, 62-39, on Dec. 7.
At the midway point of the 2014-15 season, the watch list will get cut down to the top 30 candidates and the 10 semifinalists will be announced on March 5. Four finalist for the Naismith Trophy will be selected on March 20 and the winner named on April 6.
