KU Women’s Hoops Making the Holidays Bright for Others

LAWRENCE, Kan. – ‘Tis the season, the season for giving and that is just what Kansas women’s basketball was up to on Saturday afternoon during its annual shopping trip for families in need.

“We are very fortunate and blessed with many opportunities, so this is one of many ways for our program to give back,” said head coach Bonnie Henrickson. “It’s important to remember the real meaning of this time year and it’s great to see our team having fun doing something for others. The community supports us and it’s nice to be able to make the holidays a little brighter for families in Lawrence with the help of the Hardwood Club.”

Through the Salvation Army’s Adopt-A-Family program, the Jayhawks have adopted three families this year. The team divided up into four groups and were tasked with finding outfits and presents for each member of a family.

After shopping around for a little over an hour, the Jayhawks headed to the register with four carts full of holiday cheer for deserving members of the Lawrence community. From fashion boots and winter coats to toys and dishware, the Kansas women’s basketball players hand-picked each present in hopes of making someone else’s holiday a little brighter.

The adopt-a-family program is one of several charitable organizations that the Kansas women’s basketball team participates in throughout the year. Later this week, the Jayhawks will spread even more cheer at their annual trip to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
