New Orleans, La. – Kansas junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn shot a 1-under 71 to lead the way for the Kansas women’s golf team as she sits tied for fourth after round one at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Sunday. KU as a team sits in 10th place with a score of 306 (+18).

Kawinpakorn’s 71 is the sixth time this season that she has shot under par in a round. Five strokes behind her were senior teammates Minami Levonowich and Gabriella DiMarco who carded a 77 (+5) for the round and are tied for 44th in the 81-golfer field.

KU sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee finished her first round with an 81 (+9) and is tied for 67th, while freshman Pitsinee Winyarat concluded her first 18 holes with an 83 (+11) and is tied for 77th.

Despite Kansas getting off to a slow start, Kansas coach Erin O’Neil remained optimistic about the rest of tournament.

“Overall, we had a decent first round.” O’Neil said. “Our games were a little rusty so to speak. We had a few tough holes out there in regard to ball striking and course management but it’s nothing that we can’t improve upon tomorrow. Being mentally tough will be particularly important since we are supposed to get some weather for the final two rounds. Mook (Kawinpakorn) had a great round today. She’s hitting the ball very well and is in a strong place mentally.”

LSU is leading the 15-team field by seven strokes with a score of 284 (-4). Tulane is in second place with a 291 (+3) and UCLA is third at 292 (+4). KU is two strokes behind conference foe Oklahoma State 304 (+16) for ninth place.

The second round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate will be Monday, Feb. 23, and the event will conclude Feb. 24. Live scoring for the event can be found at www.Golfstat.com.
