KU Women’s Golf Trio Named Academic All-Big 12

IRVING, Texas – Kansas women’s golfers Yupaporn “Mook” Kawinpakorn, Minami Levonowich and Meghan Potee were named to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Potee, a senior from Noblesville, Ill., who is majoring in exercise science, is on the squad for the third year in a row. Kawinpakorn, a sport science/sport management sophomore from Samutprakan, Thailand, and Levonowich, a news and information journalism junior from Hilton Head, S.C., are appearing for the first time on the team.

“All three do an excellent job of balancing the demands of traveling and missing classes and are driven to do well in the classroom,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “Meghan will graduate from KU next month and is planning on going to dental school. Like Meghan, Mook and Minami are conscientious and hard-working with their studies.”

To qualify for Academic All-Big 12, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Kansas has had three or more women’s golf Academic All-Big 12 selections every year under O’Neil, who is in her 10th season at KU. In all, the Jayhawks have had 37 academic all-conference honorees in the O’Neil era with many of those annually being named National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars, including Potee in 2012 and 2013.

No. 39 Kansas will play its final tune-up before the Big 12 Championship at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on The Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio, April 19-20. The conference championship will be at the UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas, April 25-27.
