MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Kansas women’s golfer senior Gabriella Dimarco shot a two-round 145 (+1) to lead the Jayhawks after day one of the Minnesota Invitational at The Minikahda Club on Monday.

The Jayhawks currently stand in fourth place as a team after shooting 605 (+29) and are five strokes from second heading into Tuesday’s final 18 holes.

“Overall we played steady today with the exception of giving away a few shots on our final hole,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “Minikahda is a very challenging course from tee to green and requires the players to be smart and patient all day.”

Dimarco tied her KU career low by shooting 71 (-1) in the morning round that included two birdies. She then she came back and carded a solid second round with a 74 (+2) and is tied for fourth in the 70-golfer field on the par 72 course.

“Gabby (DiMarco) posted two strong rounds for us and it’s great to see her leading the way for us,” O’Neil said. “She’s hitting the ball extremely well and her head is in a strong place mentally.”

KU sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee, champion of last week’s Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, shot 77 (+5) in both of her rounds at the Minnesota Invitational. She is tied for 26th at 154 (+10)

Jayhawk senior Michelle Woods is tied for 39th with a score of 155 (+11) after shooting a 81 (+9) in the first round and improving seven strokes with a 74 (+2) in the second round. Junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn sits tied for 44th with a 156 (+12) and freshman Kallie Gonzales is tied for 53rd with a score of 158 (+14).

Heading into the last 18 holes of the tournament on Tuesday, Kansas trails GRU Augusta (+25) by four strokes for third place and Purdue (+24) by five strokes for second place. East Carolina leads the competition by 19 strokes with a score of 581 (+5). East Carolina’s Frida Gustafsson Spang currently leads the tournament by six strokes with a 135 (-6).

“We are five shots back from second and are in a good position going into tomorrow to move up the leaderboard if we can stick to our game plan and finish strong,” O’Neil said.
