Kansas Women’s Golf Places Second in 2013-14 Opener

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Kansas sophomore Yupaporn Kawinpakorn finished in a tie for second to lead the Kansas women’s golf team to a runner-up finish at the Cardinal Cup at the Cardinal Cup Golf Course here Tuesday.

Kawinpakorn started the season strong yesterday by carding a 140 (-4, 72-68) in the first two rounds. On Tuesday, she tallied a 73 (+1) for a three round total 213 (-3). Kawinpakorn made up two strokes in her final round on the overall tournament medalist, Louisville sophomore Laura Restrepo, but ultimately finished one stroke behind Restrepo’s three round total 212.

It was truly a team effort as four Jayhawk golfers finished the tournament in the top 16, helping the Jayhawks finish with a three round total 881 and a second-place finish. KU junior Minami Levonowich carded a final round 76 and freshman Pornvipa Sakdee a 75 as each finished in a tie for 14th at 224. Junior Michelle Woods shot a final round 76 to place in a tie for 16th with a three day total 225. Senior Thanuttra Boonraksasat shot a 78 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 26th at 228.

As a team the Jayhawks finished 22 shots behind host Louisville. The Louisville B (893) finished in third place, 12 shots behind the Jayhawks. Chattanooga (901) and Middle Tennessee (905) round out the top five of the team competition.

Kansas sophomore Mackenzie Thayer, competing in the event as an individual, shot a final round 80 to finish in 53rd place with a three round total 239.

The Jayhawk women’s golf team is back in action next week in Manhattan, Kan., at the 2013 Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. The 54-hole event will take place on Monday and Tuesday, September 23-24, at Colbert Hills Golf Club.
