KU Women’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Challenge at Onion Creek

AUSTIN, Texas – Kansas senior Thanuttra Boonraksasat recorded her second-straight top-10 finish of the 2013-14 season as the KU women’s golf team finished in fourth place at the Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas, Tuesday.

Kansas entered the final round of play at the Onion Creek Original Course in second place and the Jayhawks shot their second-best round of the tournament, 292, on Tuesday. Big 12 foe Texas Tech maintained its two-round by shooting a 286 Tuesday and take the team title with a three-round 868, three strokes ahead of runner-up Miami’s 871. Coastal Carolina was third at 875 followed by Kansas’ 876 in the 11-team field.

“We were in good position going into the final round today but we just didn’t finish as strong as we are capable of playing the last few holes,” KU coach Erin O’Neil said.

Boonraksasat and sophomore Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, each finishing in the top-10 of the individual standings, paced the Jayhawks at the tournament. Boonraksasat finished in sixth place with a three-round 216 to mark her second straight top-10 finish of 2013-14. Last week Boonraksasat placed second at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. Boonraksasat carded a final round 75 Tuesday.

Kawinpakorn recorded her second top-10 finish of the season, her first coming in a second-place finish at the Cardinal Cup Sept. 16-17 in Simpsonville, Ky. Kawinpakorn shot a 73 Tuesday to finish in a tie for seventh at 218.

KU freshman Pornvipa Sakdee and senior Meghan Potee also had strong performances with each finishing in the top 15. Sakdee shot 74 in her final round to finish in 14th at 221. The Challenge at Onion Creek marks the second top-15 finish of her young career. She finished tied for 14th at the Cardinal Cup.

Potee continued the solid start to her senior campaign to finish tied for 15th in Austin. She carded a final round 71 to finish at 222. Potee won the individual title last week at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational.

The Challenge at Onion Creek marked the third straight week the Jayhawks have competed.

“It will be good to be home for more than a few days so that we can work on our putting and fine tune the other parts of our games as well,” O’Neil said.

The highlight of the day came from Kansas junior Michelle Woods, playing in the tournament as an individual, made an ace on the second hole.

The Jayhawks are back in action October 12th-13th at the Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
