HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – Behind a 2-under 70 by sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee, the Kansas women’s golf team leads after the first round at the Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate at Highlands Ranch Golf Course on Friday.
Sakdee, who carded five birdies in her opening round, is one of three Jayhawks in the top 10. As a team, KU shot a 1-over 289 and leads Big 12 foe Kansas State (291) by two strokes in the 12-team field. Long Beach State is third at 293 (+5).
“We finished strong and played the back nine at two-under which allowed us to move up the leaderboard.” Coach O’Neil said. “Everyone did a great job of sticking to their game plan for the course and put themselves in position to get the most out of their round. It’s only the first round though, and there is still work to be done the next 2 days. Course management will be crucial as will our mental toughness. Faii (Sakdee) had an awesome round shooting two under with 5 birdies. Mook (Kawinpakorn) had a very steady round across the board as well and Minami (Levonowich) came back strong on the back nine to post a solid number.”
Sakdee, who won the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational earlier this season, is tied for first in the 75-golfer field with Connie Jaffery from Kansas State. Kansas junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn also finished under-par in the first round as she sits tied for third after carding a 71 (-1) Friday, which included three birdies. Jayhawk senior Minami Levonowich finished with a 73 (+1) and is currently tied for seventh.
Two other KU seniors had solid rounds as well. Gabriella DiMarco finished her first round tied for 17th with a score of 75 (+3) and Michelle Woods concluded her round tied for 27th with a score of 77 (+5). Freshman Pitsinee Winyarat, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 47th with a score of 80 (+8).
The Jayhawks will look to continue to stay in first with the second round Saturday, Oct. 11. The Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate third and final round will be Sunday, Oct. 12.
