Woods and the Jayhawks Head to Iowa for Diane Thomason Invitational
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Michelle Woods and the Kansas women’s golf team will begin play this weekend at the 2013 Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. The University of Iowa is hosting the 54-hole event at Finkbine Golf Course.
The field is comprised of 12 teams and includes Kansas rival, and fellow Big 12 member, Kansas State. Campbell, Chattanooga, GRU Augusta, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Middle Tennessee, Ohio State, USF and Wisconsin round out the tournament field.
A junior from Manhattan, Kan., Woods has enjoyed a strong start to the season and hopes to continue her success this weekend.
“I’m playing as an individual, so I’m gonna go out there and play my game, have fun and make some putts,” Woods said.
Woods came into the season hoping to lower her stroke average and contribute to the team score.
“My main goal for the season is to lower my stroke average by three shots and help contribute to the team scoring 299 or below for each round,” Woods said.
Thus far, her scoring average for the fall 2013 campaign is nearly four strokes better than her career average. However, she still sees room for improvement.
“I have had a few rounds so far this season that I am happy with, but also a few that slipped away,” Woods said.
Asked what has led to her strong performance this fall, Woods remarked that she has seen improvement in all facets of her game.
“My putting has improved the most,” she said. “I have also improved with my irons and getting off the tee more accurately.”
Much like Woods, the Kansas women’s golf team is also off to a strong start this season and is hoping to continue that this weekend at the Diane Thomason Invitational. The team has finished in the top five of all three events thus far, including a win at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational.
“The team is on a roll right now and everyone has high expectations,” Woos said. “Of course we are looking for the W but are focusing more on each shot to reach our goal.”
The Jayhawks begin play Saturday morning and will play two rounds Saturday. The event concludes with Sunday’s final round of play.
