KU Women’s Golf Finishes Second at Iowa Tourney

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sophomore Yupaporn Kawinpakorn captured her second runner-up finish of the 2013-14 season and three other Jayhawks finished in the top-15 to lead the Kansas women’s golf team to a second-place finish at the Diane Thomason Invitational Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa.

Kawinpakorn shot a final round 75 (+3) on the Finkbrine Golf Course in Iowa City to finish in sole possession of second place with a three-round 223 (+7), one stroke ahead of Ohio State’s Jessica Porvasnik (224). This marks Kawinpakorn’s fourth straight top-12 finish. Illinois’ Stephanie Miller won the individual title with a 213 (-3) in the 73-golfer field.

Kansas coach Erin O’Neil was pleased with the overall team effort this weekend in Iowa.

“We had four players finish in the top 15 which is outstanding,” O’Neil said.

Along with Kawinpakorn’s second-place finish, junior Minami Levonowich, senior Meghan Potee, and senior Thanuttra Boonraksasat each finished in the top-15. Levonowich and Potee each finished in a tie for seventh at 227 (+11). Levonowich shot a final round 75 (+3) and Potee carded a 74 (+2) on Sunday. Boonraksasat, a senior who has been consistent all season long, finished in a tie for 15th at 229 (+13).

The Jayhawks entered the day one shot behind Illinois after two rounds. KU shot a 303 Sunday, while Illinois fired a 299 to take the team title. Illinois shot a three-round 899 to Kansas’ 904. Wisconsin finished third among the 12-team field at 907. KU has finished fourth or better in all four events this fall including two second-place finishes and a tournament title at the Marilynn Smith Invitational.

“I’m very proud of the team and what we have accomplished this fall,” O’Neil said. “We are doing a great job of getting ourselves in a position to win at each event. Now we need to adjust to being in that kind of situation and learn to finish even stronger”

The Jayhawks will look to take that next step two weeks from now in Kiawah Island, S.C., at the 2013 Palmetto Intercollegiate.
