KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Continuing on with her strong season, junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn shot a 3-under 69 for the Kansas women’s golf team after day one at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Turtle Point Golf Course on Sunday.
 
Kawinpakorn is in second place in the 104-golfer field and trails by one stroke behind leaders Eunice Yi of GRU Augusta and Lena Schaeffner Coastal Carolina, who shot a 68 (-4). Kawinpakorn, who is leading the Jayhawks this season in overall stroke average with 73.67, carded five birdies in the first round and shot in the 60’s for the second time this season.
 
KU is tied for third with GRU Augusta with a score of 288 (E) in the 20-team field. Furman University sits in second place with 285 (-3) and Coastal Carolina leads the tournament by three strokes with a score of 282 (-6).
 
Kansas senior Michelle Woods, who sits tied for 12th, had a solid first round with an even-par 72. Sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee finished one stroke behind Woods with a 73 (+1) and is tied for 14th. Senior Minami Levonowich carded a 74 (+2) as she stands tied for 23rd and other senior Gabriella DiMarco finished with an 80 (+8) and is tied for 77th.
 
“The team played great today and we are in good position going into tomorrow.” Kansas Coach Erin O’Neil said. “We need to stay patient and play smart the next two days so that we can continue to move up the leaderboard.”
 
The Jayhawks will look to position themselves to move up the leaderboard as they will tee off the second round Monday, October 27 and will finish up the tournament Tuesday, October 28th.
