Hot start has Kansas receiving more votes in polls
LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the eighth time in program history, Kansas women’s basketball has opened the season with a six-game win streak, which is gaining national attention for the Jayhawks.
Heading into the fifth week of the season, the Jayhawks are receiving votes in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Poll. Kansas has been receiving votes in the coaches’ poll throughout the entire 2018-19 campaign, but for the first time this year is also receiving votes in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll.
Kansas earned a season-high 12 votes in this week’s coaches’ poll, while earning just one vote in the AP poll. This season’s appearance in the polls marks the first that the Jayhawks have received votes since the 2013-14 campaign.
KU is led by sixth year Jessica Washington, who returns to the hardwood after missing last season to a knee injury. She posted her first 30-point performance of the year against George Mason, which gave the guard her first Big 12 Player of the Week honor for the season. Washington has recorded double-digit scoring efforts in the each of the four games she’s appeared in this season, leading the Jayhawks in scoring with 17.8 points.
While Washington is leading the charge, four other Jayhawks are averaging nine or more points this season, including Mariane De Carvalho, Austin Richardson, Kylee Kopatich and Christalah Lyons. Much of Kansas’ success is coming from long range early in the season. Collectively, the Jayhawks are fourth in both 3-point field goal percentage and 3-point field goals made in the Big 12 Conference, connecting on 36.8 percent of its attempts and averaging 7.2 threes per game.
