Lyons, Washington earn Big 12 preseason honors

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 2018-19 season hasn’t begun, but a pair of Kansas women’s basketball seniors are already being recognized for their talent on the hardwood, as Christalah Lyons and Jessica Washington earned Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors by the league coaches on Wednesday.

A 2017 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection, Lyons was one of two Jayhawks to start all 30 games last season. She led the Jayhawks with 14.8 points per game and ranked 10th in scoring in league play with 15.1 points per game. Lyons netted double-digit scoring performances 27 times throughout the 2017-18 season, including three 20-point efforts.

Sixth-year senior Jessica Washingon

Coming off of a season-ending injury in 2017-18, Washington returns as a sixth-year senior, bringing even more experience to KU’s talented back court. At the end of the 2016-17 campaign, Washington was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. She appeared in 29 games, while starting 26 as a junior. Washington averaged 17.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. She also led the league in scoring with 19.3 points per game during conference action.

The preseason awards were selected by the conference head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The 2018-19 KU season gets under way against UMKC on Nov. 7, while Big 12 play begins against Iowa State on Jan. 5

Tickets are now on sale for $109 for a full season of women’s basketball action in Allen Fieldhouse. Senior Citizen Reserved season tickets can be purchased for $80, while K Club Reserved season tickets are available at $75.
