Washington selected Co-Big 12 Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas – After a career-best performance on the road against Kansas State, redshirt junior guard Jessica Washington was named Co-Big 12 Player of the Week, as voted on by a media panel on Monday afternoon.

The weekly accolade is the first Big 12 honor for Washington and second of the season for Kansas women’s basketball. Redshirt sophomore guard McKenzie Calvert was the first Jayhawk to earn a weekly honor from the league.

Washington averaged 23 points last week behind a 14-of-24 (.583) effort, including a 14-of-10 (.174) mark from the 3-point line. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native led KU in scoring off the bench in both outings last week, while recording 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

In Washington’s first appearance of the week, the guard came off the bench to lead all scorers with a career-high 31 points. Washington made 10-of-14 (.714) attempts from the field and connected on 7-of-10 (.700) tries from long range. Washington’s seven triples on the road at K-State was one shy of KU’s single-game record of eight set in 1996. It also marked the most made 3-pointers in a single game since March of 2009.

Washington ended the game against the Wildcats shooting 71.4 percent from the floor, marking the third time this season that the redshirt junior has shot 50 percent or higher from the field. Washington’s career-best 31 points marks the third time this season to reach 20-point plateau and the first to surpass 30 points in a game. After back-to-back double digit scoring efforts, Washington has recorded a total of 10 double-digit scoring efforts this year and led all scorers in four of her last six Big 12 outings.

In her second game of the week, Washington came off the bench to lead KU with 15 points against No. 2 Baylor, one point shy of the game-high. For the second game in a row, Washington connected on 70 percent (3-of-4) or higher from long range. She also added three assists, while shooting 40 percent (4-of-10) from the field.
