Big 12 Championship up next for Kansas
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women’s golf team will travel to San Antonio, Texas Friday to compete in the three-day Big 12 Championship at the Dominion Country Club.
“Our goal this week is to focus on the details that are in our control: our attitude, physical and mental energy and making committed decisions for every shot,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “If we do our best in those areas, then the rest will take care of itself.”
Kansas’ top golfer, sophomore Ariadna Fonseca Diaz will be playing in the first position. Fonseca Diaz heads into postseason play with momentum following her second top-5 finish of the season, when she finished tied for third at the Dale McNamara Invitational. Fonseca Diaz was just named as an Academic All-Big 12 First Team member.
Fellow Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree Victoria Chandra will follow Fonseca Diaz in the lineup.
Fonseca Diaz and Chandra both competed in last year’s Big 12 Championship and finished in 43rd and 44th, respectively.
The other KU golfer with Big 12 Championship experience is Pitsinee Winyarat, who will be competing in the third position. Winyarat finished tied for 32nd in last year’s conference tournament, shooting a 9-over 225.
The two newcomers, freshman Yi-Tsen Chou and sophomore transfer Chomchana Phuchanbanchob round out the lineup for the Jayhawks. Chou has had a solid spring, posting a 74.80 scoring average, second only to Fonseca Diaz’s 74.38. Phuchanbanchob’s spring season was highlighted by her first event as a Jayhawk, the Westbrook Spring Invitational, when she finished tied for 10th.
The Dominion Country Club is a 6,263-yard par-72 course and has hosted the Big 12 Championship the two previous seasons.
“Big 12’s is an amazing atmosphere,” O’Neil said. “We are excited for the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the country.”
All three rounds will begin with tee times beginning from 8-10 a.m. Friday-Sunday.
Live scoring will be available on Big12Sports.com, as well as GolfStat.com.
