Fonseca Diaz and Yu named WGCA All-American Scholars

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars were announced Tuesday and two Jayhawk golfers were among the 1,011 recognized with this honor. Senior Ariadna Fonseca Diaz was named to the list for the third-straight year and junior Xinyun Yu earned a spot on the prestigious list for the first time. The criteria for selection is to carry a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.

“Ari (Fonseca Diaz) and Melody (Yu) are very deserving of being named as Academic All-Americans,” said Kansas women’s golf head coach Erin O’Neil. “We couldn’t be more proud of them. They both traveled in our line up on a consistent basis this year, which means a lot of missed class time, yet they manage to make fabulous grades in very challenging majors. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the discipline and dedication they put into each day on and off the golf course.”

Fonseca Diaz and Yu become the 31st and 32nd golfers in Jayhawk program history, including 27 during KU head coach Erin O’Neil’s tenure, to earn WGCA All-American honors.

In April, Fonseca Diaz and Yu were also named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 First Team where they were two of five fellow Big 12 golfers nominated with a 4.00 grade point average. Fonseca Diaz also received this honor in 2017 and she was recently named the 2018 Big 12 Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Fonseca Diaz played in all 10 events for the Jayhawks during the 2017-18 season, while Yu played in five events. Fonseca Diaz ranked second on the team in stroke average (76.07).
