TUCSON, Ariz. – Playing in an 84-golfer field, only 44 spots separate the top and bottom Jayhawks in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational, the smallest such gap in the 2015-16 season. Led by senior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn on the 6,492-yard, par-72 Sewailo Golf Club, the Jayhawks sit in 14th out of 15 teams after scoring 605 (+29) two rounds.
For the second-straight tournament, Kawinpakorn uncharacteristically shot +4 in the first round. She rebounded with an even par second round to total 148 (+4) and tie for 25th. She was followed by freshmen Ari Fonseca Diaz and Victoria Chandra, who were tied for 52nd with a 152 (+8). Fonseca Diaz’s seven birdies tied with Kawinpakorn for lead the team. Chandra, whose play in practice led to her traveling with the team, proved she belonged by shooting a steady 76 (+4) in both rounds.
Junior Pornvipa Sakdee had the best first round for Kansas, shooting a 74 (+2). The highlight of her first round was an eagle on the par-5 hole three. Sakdee ended the day tied for 59th after carding 154 (+10). Sophomore Pitsinee Winyarat scored 157 (+13) to tie for 66th. Freshman Laine Evans, competing as an individual, is tied for 69th after recording a 158 (+14).
“We struggled with club selection into greens today and our putting let us down in some key moments, especially toward the end of the second round,” 12th-year KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “We must do a better job of focusing on what section of the green we want to leave ourselves in rather than attempting to execute the perfect shot at the pin.”
Leading the tournament field is Arizona State, who shot a 574 (-2) and leads host Arizona by one stroke. Linnea Strom of Arizona State leads all individuals by three strokes after shooting 135 (-9).
The Arizona Wildcat Invitational will conclude with the third and final round on Tuesday, March 15. The round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 am (Mountain Time). Live stats can be found at Birdiefire.com.
