Jayhawks begin new year with Orlando Women's Amateur

ORLANDO, Fla. –  The Kansas women’s golf team kicked off 2019 on the greens as the Jayhawks traveled to Florida to compete in the Women’s Orlando International Amateur Tournament January 3 – 5. The event was held at the Orange County National’s Panther Lake course. Six players from KU’s 12-person squad traveled to the tournament, with four making the cut during the final round of play.

“I’m very excited to have so many of our players competing over the holiday break,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “It’s a great way to stay sharp and will make a big difference for us when the spring season starts in about a month.”

Sophomore Sera Tadokoro fought through the windy conditions and led the way for the Jayhawks, finishing in 17th place after three rounds. She fired a collective score of 7-over par 223, including recording her best round of the week on the final day with even par, which included 11 pars and four birdies. Tadokoro also led the team with nine birdies over the three-day tournament.

Following Tadokoro, senior Ariadna Fonseca Diaz placed 28th with a score of 12-over par 228. Her best score came on the first day of action with a 75. She finished the tournament by collectively parring 36 holes over three days, a team high. Freshman Abby Glynn saw improvement based off her minimal action in her fall campaign, finishing three spots behind Fonseca Diaz for a 31st-place finish while collectively tying Fonseca Diaz’s score. Glynn fired a first-round 73 which marked her best round in her young collegiate career.

Sophomore Aristelle Acuff finished in 33rd place, finishing 16-over 232 with a career-best round of 74 on the opening day of play. After not seeing any action for the Jayhawks in the fall, freshman Kelly Strickland played two rounds with a pair of 78s, good for a two-day, 12-over par 156. Fellow freshman Lauren Heinlein fired a two-round 14-over 156 to finish out the scoring for Kansas.
