SHOAL CREEK, Ala. – Kansas women’s golfers Yupaporn “Mook” Kawinpakorn and Pornvipa “Faii” Sakdee finished the first of three rounds at the NCAA Regional in Shoal Creek. Playing at the 6,470-yard, par-72 Shoal Creek Country Club, Kawinpakorn and Sakdee scored 75 (+3) and 79 (+7), respectively.

Entering Friday’s second round, Kawinpakorn is tied for 17th and Sakdee is tied for 63rd in the 96-golfer field. Kawinpakorn trails leader Jennifer Hahn of Vanderbilt by five strokes and is two shots from fourth.

The low six teams and low three individuals (not on those teams) from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 20-25, at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. If the tournament ended after one round, Kawinpakorn would miss qualifying by 1 stroke.

“Mook and Faii didn’t have the best ball striking day but they hung in there and are still very much in a good position,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “There’s still lots of golf left to be played.”

For Kawinpakorn, the front and back nine presented two different stories. She shot (-1) on the front nine but struggled in the back nine, shooting (+4). Sakdee shot (+3) in her first nine holes and scored +4 in her last nine holes.

“The wind picked up and was swirling a lot on the back nine, which made it difficult to be confident in club selection most of the day and that got in our heads a little,” O’Neil said.

The NCAA Regional will continue with round two on Friday, May 6. Tee off for teams will be 7:30 a.m. (Central) and individuals will tee off at 8:15 a.m. Live stats can be found at GolfStat.com.
