Jayhawks Head to Alabama with Oregon on Their Minds

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s golfers Yupaporn Kawinpakorn and Pornvipa Sakdee will head to Shoal Creek, Alabama to play in the NCAA Regional as individuals at the Shoal Creek Club, May 5-7.
 
Kawinpakorn and Sakdee will be two of six individuals competing in the competing in the 96-golfer field, which will consist of 18 teams that either qualified automatically by winning their respective conference championship or were at-large selections.
 
Four NCAA Regionals consist of 72 total teams. The low six teams and low three individuals (not on those teams) from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 20-25, at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
 
In 2015-16, Kawinpakorn won five individual titles, setting a KU record for most titles in a season. Along the way to capturing her five titles, the senior set new KU records for 18-hole score with her 63 (-8) in the opening round of the Schooner Classic (Sept. 19-21) and 54-hole score with a 209 (-7) at the Red Raider Invitational (April 8-9).
 
Meanwhile, Sakdee has impressed in limited action in 2015-16. The junior enters postseason play with two consecutive top-20 finishes, tying for seventh at the Red Raider Invitational and 12th at the Big 12 Championship (April 22-24). Her stroke average of 74.2 demonstrated steady improvement from her 2014-15 average of 74.9 and also ranks amongst the top five in school history.
 
This will be a repeat trip for Kawinpakorn and Sakdee to the postseason as a tandem. Both were part of the KU squad that earned an at-large team selection in 2014 and advanced to the NCAA Championship, where the Jayhawks finished 24th. Kawinpakorn is the first-ever Jayhawk to make a third trip to the NCAA postseason, as she competed as an individual at the 2015 San Antonio Regional, where she tied for 10th and finished one stroke short of qualifying for nationals, with a score of 213 (-3). Sakdee will be making her first trip as an individual.
 
The NCAA Regional will play one round each day from May 5-7. Tee off for teams will be 7:30 a.m. and individuals will tee off at 8:15 a.m. (all times Central). Live stats can be found at GolfStat.com.
