Jayhawks Travel to Lincoln for Nebraska Invitational

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Kansas women’s golf team will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the Nebraska Invitational held at Wilderness Ridge on October 1-3.

“Wilderness Ridge has pretty good sized greens and I think it’s score able. There are plenty of birdies out there, we just have to play smart,” said head coach Erin O’Neil

After finishing second at the Marilynn Smith Invitational, the Jayhawks had two weeks to prepare for their upcoming tournament.

“We tried to check in on mechanical and technical things the first week back during most of our practices and then we shifted over to more course management and performance enhancement type skills after that,” said O’Neil. “We are trying to hit all parts of our games before heading out there.”

Senior Pisinee “Lizzie” Winyarat has been the top Kansas finisher in the last two events. Winyarat finished tied for fifth at the Marilynn Smith Invitational, which was her career-best finish and first top-five finish. Winyarat will be competing in the first position at the Nebraska Invitational.

“Lizzie has been playing very consistent. Hopefully she’s starting to see that she can score lower than she has been,” said O’Neil. “She’s been hitting the ball very well. Hopefully she can keep her expectations in a good spot and play her game and she’ll see some good results.”

In the second position will be Kansas sophomore Yi-Tsen Chou. Chou started out the Marilynn Smith Invitational strong in a tie for fifth after the first round. However, she struggled in the final round of the tournament. Chou finished ninth overall in the event, her first top-10 finish this season. Overall, Chou has been a consistent player for the Jayhawks finishing second on the Kansas leaderboard in the past two tournaments.

Chou will be followed by junior Ariadna Fonseca Diaz, freshman Sera Tadokoro and junior Victoria Chandra. The Nebraska Invitational will be Chandra’s first team event this season as, she competed as an individual at the Marilynn Smith Invitational and finished tied for 17th.

Kallie Gonzales, Chomchana Phuchanbanchob, Annika Cedo, and Xinyun Yu will also be traveling to the event, all playing as individuals.

Kansas will compete against Nebraska, Boise State, Cal Irvine, Creighton, South Dakota, North Dakota State and Nebraska-Omaha.

Round one of the three-day event will start October 1 and conclude with the final round on October 3.
