Tadokoro and Winters head to U.S. Women's Amateur

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s golf sophomore Sera Tadokoro is set to close out her busy summer on the golf course with the U.S. Women’s Amateur which takes place from August 6-12. Tadokoro qualified on June 27 at the Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence, shooting an even 72, which tied former Jayhawk and 2012 graduate Katy (Nugent) Winters. The two will compete in a field of 150 players in the annual tournament which has been a tradition since its start in 1895.

“Playing in this event is such a wonderful opportunity for Sera, especially since she’s so young,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “The golf course is the same kind of challenge you would face at an NCAA Championship as is the level of competition she will face against the field. The best of the best are here and being around that caliber of play is the only way to get to the next level.”

The tournament will be held at the 6,365 yards/Par 71 Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tennessee. Winters is set to tee off at 7:55 a.m., while Tadokoro follows at 8:50 a.m. (CDT).

“I know Sera will learn a lot, specifically that she belongs out here.” O’Neil mentioned. “The first two rounds of stroke play are all about playing steady, smart golf.  You don’t have to shoot way under par to make it to match play which is where the real fun begins. I’m very excited to see how the week goes for her.”

Tadokoro participated in eight events during her freshman year and recorded a 76.13 scoring average. Nugent spent her junior and senior year with the Jayhawks and averaged a 77.70 scoring average in her senior campaign.

“Katy has always been a very competitive person also and I know this tournament in particular fuels that fire for her,” O’Neil said. “There’s no doubt this week will be a great opportunity for all of our Jayhawks.”

Starting Wednesday, Fox Sports 1 (FS1) will provide coverage over five days of play. Match play will be televised from 4-7 p.m., (ET) on August 8-10 along with a 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., slot on Saturday, August 11. The championship match will be held on Sunday, August 12 from 2-5 p.m.
