Strong Start for Jayhawks at Louisville Invite

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas rowing team completed its first day of the 2014 spring season, compiling top-10 finishes in all six races the team competed in against Duke and Michigan State.

KU began the day with a third-place finish in the First Varsity Eight (6:53.51). Rowing in the boat were seniors Caitlyn Decker, Elizabeth Scherer, Kaylee Sextro, Alexandra Torquemada, coxswain Catherine Clements, juniors Claudijah Lever and Brooke Thuston, sophomore Maggie Duncan and freshman Maddie Irelan.

The Jayhawks glided to a win in the First Varsity Four (7:34.80), winning the race by more than eight seconds. Rowing for KU were seniors Carly Iverson, Jessica Jacob, coxswain Abbey Lozenski, Emma Umbarger and sophomore Jackie Adamle.

Next up was the First Novice Eight race where KU placed second overall (7:25.89). The race was the first taste of action for this year’s crop of freshman that included Bailey Brandon, Danielle Gibson, Christina Granzow, Madison Hovis, Olivia Loney, coxswain Mallory Miller, Emily Ruble and Allison Schaaf.

The second half of the day began with the Jayhawks Second Varsity Eight finishing in second place (6:56.13). Members of the boat were seniors Kelsie Fiss, Tearson ‘Jade’ Lambkins, Jessica Miller, juniors Julia Alvey, Angie Flores-Rodriguez, Allie Griffin, sophomore coxswain Mary Slattery, and freshmen Emma O’Neill and Katherine Young.

The Second Varsity Four continued the day by earning a second-place finish (7:44.78). Rowing for Kansas were juniors Erin Brogan, Alexa Fowlkes, Jennifer Hartzler, coxswain Sarah Lasini and sophomore Tessa Scott.

The first day of the Louisville Invite concluded with the Second Novice Eight finishing in second place (7:25.89). Members of the boat included senior Meghan Cahill, juniors Kristen Byrd and Andrea Joyce, sophomore Breeona Foster, freshmen Brianna Anderson, Kate Cropp, Kylee Dewey and coxswain Sienna Durr.

The first day of competition fared well for the Jayhawks whose first practice of the season on water came last week. Despite the lack of time spent on the water, the coaching staff is happy with how the team performed.

“I think we competed well,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “I think the First Varsity Four did a good job and we had some first-year women come out and perform at a high-level. We are still chasing some of those top-20 teams, but we are further ahead now than we were at the same time last year.”

The Jayhawks will look to add more top-10 finishes as they close out their first regatta of the spring season at the Louisville Invite.
