Rowing Earns Top-10 Finishes at the Head of the Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Kansas rowing program concluded day one at the Head of the Oklahoma with four top-10 finishes in the four races it competed in throughout the day.

The Jayhawks were led by a first-place finish in the Women’s Collegiate Novice Four. Rowing in the boat were freshmen Maddie Irelan, Lexie Lanphere, Emma O’Neill, Katherine Young and coxswain Kenzie Obrochta. These freshman all came to Kansas with prior rowing experience.

“We knew we had some talented freshman coming in and they certainly performed well for us today,” Head Coach Rob Catloth said.

Kansas’ Varsity Eight boat finished in second place, while senior Alexandra Torquemada and sophomore Maggie Duncan earned a fourth-place finish in the Double. The Collegiate Four rounded out the day races for the Jayhawks as they finished in seventh place. The team also competed in 500 meter night sprints Saturday evening. Overall, the Kansas coaching staff was pleased with its first showing of the season.

“I am pleased with our performance today,” Catloth said. “We set some goals and we achieved a big portion of them so far. I am looking forward to seeing how we compete tomorrow.”

The two-day event will conclude with a half day on Sunday with the Jayhawks competing in the Single, Pair, Four and Quad races.
