Rowing Adds Top-Five Finishes to Conclude Weekend

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Kansas rowing program added four top-10 finishes to conclude its first regatta of the 2013-14 season at the Head of the Oklahoma.

Kansas competed in eight races at the Head of the Oklahoma and came away with eight top-10 finishes. The fall rowing season follows different guidelines than the official spring season, but the coaching staff is equally happy with the team’s results.

Kansas began the day with a third-place finish in the Women’s Open Quad. Members of the boat include sophomore Maggie Duncan, junior Jennifer Hartzler and senior Kaylee Sextro and Alexandra Torquemada.

The next race for the Jayhawks was the Women’s Open Four where Kansas finished in third place. Rowing in the boat were juniors Julia Alvey, Brooke Thuston, and seniors Amanda Lewis and Jessica Miller.

“We competed in a lot of races this weekend, and I feel it was a good start to the season,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “We had some good performances this weekend and saw some success. We set a standard that we can now look to build on, and believe me, it is better to build from the top than the bottom.”

Kansas continued the day with a third-place finish in the Women’s Open Four. Members of the boat include: Duncan, Hartzler and seniors Kaylee Sextro and Alexandra Torquemada. The final race for the Jayhawks was the Women’s Open Four where Kansas finished in third place. Rowing in the boat were Alvey, fellow junior Brooke Thuston, seniors Amanda Lewis and Jessica Miller.

The Jayhawks will now focus their attention on the Jayhawk Jamboree, the first regatta KU has hosted in Lawrence since 2005. The home event will take place on October 20 at the Kansas Boathouse located in Burcham Park.
