Two Second-Place Finishes Highlight Day One at the Head of the Hooch

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas rowing completed the first day at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn., as the Jayhawks came away with a pair of second-place finishes and four total top-10 finishes.

The Jayhawks began the day with a sixth-place finish out of 28 boats in the Women’s Championship Eight. Rowing in the boat were: sophomore Maggie Duncan, juniors Erin Brogan, Claudijah Lever, Brooke Thuston and seniors Catherine Clements (coxswain), Caitlyn Decker, Elizabeth Scherer, Kaylee Sextro and Alexandra Torquemada.

Kansas followed that up with a fifth-place finish in the Women’s College and Club Novice Four. Freshmen Sienna Durr (coxswain), Kylee Dewey, Sarah Elstien, Jordan Helms and Brie Mingus powered the boat. The race featured 31 total boats.

KU then hit its stride as they were runner-up in the Women’s College and Club Novice Eight. Rowing in the boat were: freshmen Kenzie Obrochta (coxswain), Brianna Anderson, Madison Hovis, Maddie Irelan, Lexie Lanphere, Olivia Loney, Emma O’Neill, Emily Ruble and Katherine Young.

The Jayhawks maintained their momentum as sophomore Maggie Duncan and senior Alexandra Torquemada earned a second-place finish in the Women’s Championship Double, which included 12 total boats.

Kansas also competed in the Women’s Championship Four to wrap up the day. The Jayhawks did not place in the event.

The KU coaching staff was generally pleased with the day one results.

“We came really close to accomplishing our goals,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “We hoped for a top-four finish in the (Women’s Championship) Eights, but the placing second in both the Novice Eight and the Double really helped our team out.”

The Head of the Hooch will conclude Sunday, Nov. 3 with a half day of racing beginning at 8 a.m.
