Gagnet Invited to U20 French National Team Camp

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer freshman Aurélie Gagnet has been invited to train with the U-20 French National Team Camp. The Montpellier, France native was one of 26 players chosen and will look to make the final roster of 21 that will compete at the U20 Women’s World Cup to take place later this summer in Canada.

The five-day camp will run Feb. 10-14 at the training center in Clairefontaine, France. In addition to training, the team will play several exhibitions against club teams from across France. Earlier this year, France qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with its victory at the 2013 U19 UEFA Championship. France will participate in its fifth FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Aug. 5-24 to be held in four cities across Canada.

“This is a great honor for me,” said Gagnet. “It’s always great to have the opportunity to play for your national team. I’m excited to get to see many of the girls that I’ve played with over the past few years and I know they are very good players, so it should be a challenging week.”

A defender, she has already tallied substantial time with the France’s youth national teams in previous years. Last summer, she helped the U19 French Nationals to a victory in the UEFA Cup in Wales. Gagnet played in four of the five tournament stage matches, including the event final against England.

In her first year at KU, Gagnet appeared in 15 of the team’s 21 games and logged more than 1,088 minutes of field time to average over 72 minutes per outing. At season’s end she was named to the Big 12’s All-Newcomer Team.

The final national team roster is expected to be announced shortly after the conclusion of the camp next week. The team will then reconvene over the summer to begin its preparations for the tournament in August.
