LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior Caroline Kastor put in her second goal of the season and added an assist as three other Jayhawks added goals in Kansas’ 4-1 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers Sunday afternoon inside the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
The win moved the Jayhawks to 3-1 on the season, while the Boilermakers dropped to 2-2 in their 2013 campaign.
“I thought we played really well today,” said head coach Mark Francis. “We made a few changes in our formation which really allowed our players to be more creative and I think they really responded well to that. Today was just a glimpse of what I think this team is capable of because I think there’s still some room for improvement.”
After scoring four total goals over its first three games of the season, the Kansas offense erupted, attacking the Purdue back line early and often throughout the afternoon. Redshirt sophomore Liana Salazar opened the KU scoring in the 18th minute. Junior Jamie Fletcher was working into some open space inside the Purdue penalty area when a Boilermaker defender came in on a late tackle, prompting a quick whistle from the referee. The foul earned Salazar the right to take the KU penalty kick, which she easily converted on and gave her team a 1-0 lead.
The score was the sixth of Salazar’s career the first penalty kick of her career.
Just 17 minutes later KU struck again, this time with the foot of sophomore Ashley Williams. After a Purdue turnover near midfield, freshman Ashley Pankey gained possession and played a long pass downfield to a streaking Williams. Williams corralled the pass and beat the Purdue goalkeeper, tapping in the easy score and her first goal of the season.
The Jayhawks first half dominance not only showed on the scoreboard, but was reflected on the stat sheet as well. KU outshot the visitors 11-5, which included a 6-2 advantage in shots on frame.
Kansas’ aggressiveness continued in the second period when, just 13 minutes into the half, Kastor gave her team a commanding 3-0 lead. In what was a nearly identical play to the Pankey-Williams goal, Kastor was found on the end of a long downfield pass by her junior teammate, Jamie Fletcher. After some clever dribbling, Kastor beat the goalkeeper and shot in her second goal of the season and the 22nd of her Kansas career.
After holding its opponents scoreless in its previous 348 minutes, the Kansas defense gave up a Purdue goal on a penalty kick. Junior Haley Yearout was whistled for a foul in the 83rd minute on a Boilermaker player inside the KU box. Purdue’s Jordan Pawlick converted on the PK attempt and slotted in her team’s only goal of the game and just the second given up by the Jayhawks on the season.
With the victory in tow, Kansas added some insurance only two minutes after the Purdue PK. Kastor broke free from an opposing defender in the 85th minute and carried the ball deep into the Purdue box before putting in a cross out front of the goal. Sophomore Courtney Dickerson was there to head in the pass, flipping in the ball inside the top left corner of the Boilermaker frame.
The score was Dickerson’s first of the year and earned Kastor her second assist of the season, already equaling her total from the entire 2012 season.
The referee blew the full time whistle five minutes later, which gave the Jayhawks its third-consecutive win and its first weekend sweep of the year.
Kansas posted season-highs in both shots (23) and shots on goal (13), with Williams leading the team in both categories, tallying five and four, respectively, all in just 35 minutes of play. The Jayhawks’ junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud got the win after she made five saves against the Boilermakers, her most in a match in 2013.
Kastor posted her second game of the year with a goal and assists and notched her sixth-career match with three or more points.
Kansas will now trek to Tempe, Ariz., to take part in the Sun Devil Desert Classic next weekend. KU will play Arizona on Friday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. (CT) before taking on host Arizona State on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m. (CT).
