Eight Jayhawks Tabbed to Academic All-Big 12 Team

IRVING, Texas – Seniors Jamie Fletcher, Caroline Van Slambrouck and Haley Yearout were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the third-consecutive year to highlight a list of eight Kansas Jayhawks recognized on the conference’s academic list after it was released Tuesday. The announcement marked the sixth time in seven seasons KU has had eight or more selected to the conference’s all-academic teams.

KU saw three Jayhawks claim spots on the academic team for the third-straight year, with Fletcher (journalism) and Van Slambrouck (English, history) earning a spot on the first team in all three of their eligible seasons and Yearout (exercise science) also finding her name on the All-Big 12 First Team for the third year in a row.

Kansas featured five first-time selections on the academic list. Senior Kelsey Lyden (communications) and sophomores Tayler Estrada (exercise science), Ashley Pankey (human biology), Kaley Smith (exercise science) and Morgan Williams (biochemistry) each earned academic honors for the first time.

Smith was one of six Big 12 student-athletes to be named to the first team with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

This marks the ninth-straight season KU has put at least six student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Team. Fletcher, Van Slambrouck and Yearout also became the 19th, 20th and 21st Jayhawks to earn first team academic honors three times in a career.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Kansas concluded its regular season last weekend going 15-4-0 overall to earn the No. 3 seed at the Big 12 Soccer Championship to be held in Kansas City, Missouri this week. The Jayhawks are scheduled to take on No. 6-seeded Oklahoma on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m., inside the Swope Soccer Village.
