THE BASELINEThe No. 75 Kansas women’s tennis team looks to maintain its momentum coming off of two-consecutive Big 12 Conference wins last weekend as it heads down to Texas to square off with North Texas and SMU. KU is coming off of a five-match homestand where it recorded a 3-2 mark, including back-to-back wins over conference foes Iowa State and West Virginia. First serve is set for 3 p.m., Friday, March 27 against North Texas at the Waranch Tennis Complex and noon on Saturday, March 28 at the SMU Tennis Complex.
THE SERIES: KANSAS vs. NORTH TEXASNorth Texas leads the all-time series with Kansas, 3-0. The last time the two programs met was March 3, 2012 when then-freshman, Maria Belen Luduena rattled off Kansas’ only victory that day against North Texas’ Valentina Starkova in straight-sets 6-3, 6-4. The Mean Green overpowered the Jayhawks 6-1.
SCOUTING THE MEAN GREENNorth Texas enters Friday’s match with an 4-10 overall mark. The Mean Green have faced seven ranked opponents thus far on the season and opened dual match play Jan. 20 by dropping three-consecutive matches against three ranked opponents including Big 12 team Oklahoma. They then blanked Stephen F. Austin, 4-0, but since then have went on to win three of their last six matches including a 4-3 loss to No. 58 San Diego State on March 8. Junior Anastasiya Shestakova leads North Texas in singles with a 6-6 record, winning her last three matches. Shestakova posted a 6-6 record during fall play advancing to the third round of the Racquet Club Invitational and going 2-2 at the Oklahoma Invitational.
THE SERIES: KANSAS vs. SMUKU leads the all-time series with SMU, 2-0. The two programs last met on April 21, 2001 when Kansas defeated SMU in a 5-2 decision.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGSSMU enters Saturdays match with an 11-4 overall mark. The Mustangs opened dual match play with seven-consecutive victories. They then dropped three-consecutive matches, including two matches to Big 12 squads Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. SMU has won four of its last six matches including a win over then-No.41 New Mexico State, who Kansas blanked on 4-0 on Feb. 7. The Mustangs will first play host to UAB on Friday, March 27 before welcoming Kansas.
