Smith Hinton Tabbed Big 12 Women's Tennis Co-Player of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas freshman Smith Hinton was named the Big 12 Conference Co-Women’s Tennis Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon, the league office announced. Hinton is the second Jayhawk to pick up the award in the last three weeks as senior Maria Belen Luduena took home the award on March 24.

Hinton teamed up with fellow freshman Summer Collins, for the first time in dual-match play, for a 6-3 win over KSU’s Iva Bago and Livi Cirnu in helping the Jayhawks secure the doubles point in KU’s lone match during the past week of action.

Hinton then improved to 3-1 overall at the No. 2 singles position with a dominant, 6-1, 6-2, win over Kansas State’s Palma Juhasz. Hinton’s win in singles, coupled with her doubles victory helped propel Kansas to its first win over in-state rival Kansas State since 2009, as the Jayhawks blanked the Wildcats, 4-0, in the 2015 Sunflower Showdown.

Hinton and her Jayhawk opponents will host Tulsa on Wednesday, April 8, in KU’s final home contest of the 2014-15 campaign. First serve is slated for 2 p.m., at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
