Four Jayhawks Named to 2014 First Team Academic All-Big 12

IRVING, Texas – A program-high four members of the Kansas women’s tennis team were named to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 First Team as announced by the conference Tuesday. Senior Claire Dreyer, junior Maria Belen Ludueña, and sophomores Maria Jose Cardona and Anastasija Trubica, were honored for achieving GPAs higher than 3.20.

Kansas’ four honorees is the most Academic All-Big 12s for the program in one year. The program’s previous high came in 2011 when three Jayhawks were named to the list.

This is Ludueña’s second Academic All-Big 12 award in a row after being the only Jayhawk to be honored last season. A native of Curicó, Chile, Ludueña is majoring in economics with a minor in business. This season, Ludueña touts a 19-12 in doubles and has gone 17-20 this season in singles.

The honor is Dreyer’s first in her three seasons as a Jayhawk. After transferring from the University of Dayton, Dreyer has posted an impressive 47-18 career record in singles and has gone 14-5 this season. The St. Louis, Mo., native is majoring in community health and nursing.

Cardona, a product of Santiago, Colombia, is majoring in illustration with a minor in business. The first-time honoree has gone 30-40 in singles during her two years as a Jayhawk and touts a 19-12 record in doubles this season.

Trubica is majoring in journalism with an emphasis in strategic communication. This is the first accolade for the sophomore, who boasts a 24-15 career record in doubles and 25-28 mark in singles.

Up next, the Jayhawks travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to meet the Iowa State Cyclones in the first round of the 2014 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship. The match will take place at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at host TCU, at 10 a.m., April 24.
