Kansas Tennis Players Advance in First Day of ITA Summer Circuit

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Tennis players had a strong showing Friday, with six of the eight athletes advancing to the third round of singles play and all eight athletes advancing in the doubles draw.

Returning letterwinner Caroline Henderson cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the first round to play teammate Jasmine Almaguer who defeated Taylor Smith of Emporia State 6-0, 6-4. Henderson advanced with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 and will play Katie Swan on Saturday.

Newcomer Rachel McNeely swept her first round competition 6-0, 6-0 and went on to defeat Natalie Looney of South Carolina in a tie break to advance to the third round. Her opponent on Saturday will be teammate Smith Hinton, who won her opening match 6-3, 6-1 and went on to defeat fellow Jayhawk Melinda Johnson 6-3, 6-0 in the second round.

After dominating performances from Alexis Czapinski and Madison Harrison in the first round, the two faced each other in the second round resulting in a 6-1, 6-3 victory for Harrison. Harrison will play Olivia Sneed of Ohio State on Saturday.

Summer Collins also advanced to the third round handily after a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the first round and a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Sara Goodwin of Princeton in the second round.

In doubles competition, the pairings of Czapinski/Johnson, Henderson/McNeely, Almaguer/Harrison, and Hinton/Collins all advanced to the second round and will compete on Saturday.
