Collins and Cardona Open Fall 2015 Season at Midland Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. — A pair of Jayhawks will open the Kansas women’s tennis team’s fall season as they travel to Midland, Texas for the 2015 Midland Invitational. This year’s event will take place Sept. 18-20, with senior Maria Jose Cardona and sophomore Summer Collins representing KU in the field.

Kansas head coach Todd Chapman hopes the competitive level of this first tournament will establish a tone of constant improvement among his team.

“We are excited to get a new season kicked off this weekend in Midland,” said Chapman. “The Midland Invitational is a very tough tournament, so I know Maria and Summer are going to get great competitive matches. Our hope is to put our players in as competitive of situations as we can with all of the fall tournaments. This way we know what we need to come home and work on to continue each individual’s development and also the team’s development.”

Cardona will be returning this semester after an injury cut her spring 2015 semester short. The Santiago, Chile, native has proven her value on the team for the last three years, including posting a 15-10 doubles record in the spring of her sophomore year and defeating the ranked #36 Wichita State doubles team last semester before her injury.

Collins, an Atlanta, Georgia, native will be alongside Cardona this weekend at the Midland Invitational. One of four returning sophomores on the 2015-16 KU roster, she competed in singles at the tournament last fall and ended her freshman fall semester with a 2-6 record in singles play.

Other teams that will compete at the Midland Invitational include Texas Tech, Rice, TCU, Tulsa, Penn. State, North Texas, UAB, UTA, Abilene Christian and Lamar.
