Cardona and Collins To Play in Midland Invitational Doubles Semifinals Sunday

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Sandwiched in between stoppages for rain showers Kansas women’s tennis doubles tandem Maria Jose Cardona and Summer Collins defeated TCU’s Seda Arantekin and Alexis Pereira, 6-3, Saturday afternoon to advance to the semifinal round of the Midland Invitational.

“We played a good team from TCU today,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “I thought we started out really well. Maria and Summer played smart in the critical moments of the match and won rather comfortably. They are in the semifinals in the morning and we hope we get the opportunity to play for the championship.”

Cardona and Pereira also faced off in the singles consolation action with Pereira coming away with the 8-6 win. The match was shortened due to the inclement weather.

“Maria played a tough player from TCU and had a lot of chances to come out on the winning side of things,” said Chapman. “She didn’t play some of the big points as well as she would have liked and that was the difference in the match.”

Cardona and Collins will return to the courts in Midland, Texas, Sunday morning. If they win and advance to the finals, they will play for the Midland Invitational championship Sunday afternoon.
