Women's Tennis sees Three Jayhawks Advance in Singles, Along with Doubles Tandem at Oklahoma Classic
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas women’s tennis saw three freshmen advance to Sunday’s action in the singles draws, while one doubles team also advanced at the Oklahoma Classic held Saturday, at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
“Today was another solid day of competition and exactly what we need at this point of the season,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “Our goal is to finish the tournament off the right way and have our best day of the weekend tomorrow.”
After a week of working on doubles play, Maria Belen Ludueña and Madison Harrison advanced in the Crimson Draw quarterfinals as the pair first defeated Rongrong Leenabanchong and Marcelina Cichon from Tulsa, 8-4, before the Jayhawk duo defeated Mia Jurasic and Craft from Arkansas, 8-4.
In singles play in the Sooner Draw consolation bracket, freshman Smith Hinton defeated Jurasic from Arkansas, 6-0, 7-6, in the semifinals. Kansas freshman Alexis Czapinski defeated Michelle Garpenlov from Denver in the Switzer Draw consolation quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and will continue into Sunday’s action.
In the Switzer Draw consolation bracket quarterfinals, Jayhawk freshman Lauren Pickens was victorious over Nicole Breaux of Arkansas, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
The final day of the Oklahoma Classic will take place Sunday with first serve getting underway at 9 a.m.
