Jayhawks Fall in Midland Invitational Semifinals

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas women’s tennis’ duo composed of senior Maria Jose Cardona and sophomore Summer Collins competed in Sunday’s 2015 Midland Invitational semifinal round, coming up short against Texas Tech’s Sabrina Federici and Felicity Malthy, 6-4. Cardona and Collins were the lone Jayhawks in action over the weekend.

Paired up for the first time in their KU careers, Cardona and Collins had a successful weekend as they opened the fall 2015 campaign for the Jayhawk program.

“Today didn’t go the way we had hoped,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “It was a hard fought match. We definitely had chances to come out on the winning side of things. We will head home and look to work on the areas that we had trouble with this weekend.”

Kansas will have its full squad competing next weekend as it continues play in its fall season. The Jayhawks will participate in two tournaments as some players will compete in the Oklahoma Invitational (Sept. 25-27) in Norman, Oklahoma, while others will trek to Little Rock, Arkansas for the Little Rock Invitational (Sept. 25-27).

“Our entire team will be competing in two tough tournaments next weekend,” said Chapman. “We are excited to get another chance to continue our growth and development.”
