Jayhawks Get Off To Good Start at ITA Central Regionals
LAWRENCE Kan. – On day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regionals, three Kansas women’s tennis players advanced out of the qualifying rounds. Combined with two players who were placed in the main draw, a total of five Jayhawks will hit the courts in main draw singles action Friday, at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State University.
“Today was a good start to the tournament,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “Three players qualified for the main draw singles giving us five total playing in the main draw starting Friday. Last year we only had two players in the main draw, so it is a step in the right direction.
“We went 11-5 today in our 16 singles matches. I felt like we could have gotten a couple more through qualifying, but I thought we gave a really good effort. Tomorrow we have the chance to build on today, but the competition will be much stiffer.”
The five Jayhawks playing in Friday’s main draw will be freshmen Madison Harrison, Summer Collins and Smith Hinton, who each advanced from Thursday’s qualifying rounds. Junior Maria Jose Cardona and senior Maria Belen Ludueña were placed in the main draw without having to play in the qualifying rounds.
Harrison advanced by defeating Michelle Lo from Nebaska-Omaha (UNO), 6-2, 7-5 in the first round and Jess Heeps Ericksen of Arkansas, 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. In the first round, Collins won against Lauren Wagner of Nebraska, 6-1, 6-0 and continued to the main draw by besting Molly Matricardi of UNO, 6-1, 6-2. Hinton defeated Mary Hanna from Nebraska, 6-4, 6-3 in her opening match, and Anthena Chrysanthou from Saint Louis, 6-2, 6-0 in her second qualifying match.
