Cardona and Ludueña Advance to ITA Central Regional Doubles Semifinals

LAWRENCE Kan. – Kansas women’s tennis doubles team comprised of junior Maria Jose Cardona and senior Maria Belen Ludueña advanced to the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regionals Sunday morning.

Doubles play has been a focus in recent practices and upperclassmen Ludueña and Cardona were able to show how their hard work this fall season has paid off with the wins they have collected in the ITA Central Regionals. The duo defeated Wichita State’s Abby Stevens and Giulia Guidetti, 8-3, and will take on Oklahoma State’s Katarina Adamovic and Vladika Babic in the semifinal round.

“I was pleased that Belen (Ludueña) and Cote (Cardona) found a way to win comfortably, without playing their best tennis today,” said KU head coach Todd Chapman. “They are starting to show some growth as a doubles team. Belen had a tough day in singles. She didn’t play her best, but her opponent had a lot to do with it. The girls have a tough Oklahoma State team to play in the semifinals in the morning, but we are excited for the challenge.”

Ludueña struggled in the singles quarterfinals and lost her match against Adamovic from OSU, 6-1, 6-2.

Match play will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m where Ludueña/Cardona will compete in the (ITA) Central Regional for the chance to advance to the finals. For complete results visit KUAthletics.com or follow @KansasTennis on twitter.
