Cardona and Ludueña Fall in ITA Central Regional Semifinals

LAWRENCE Kan. – Kansas women’s tennis heads home from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regionals held in Stillwater, Oklahoma, after a competitive weekend that saw the doubles team of junior Maria Jose Cardona and senior Maria Belen Ludueña advance to the semifinal round of play.

Cardona and Ludueña advanced to the final four teams in the field, but dropped an 8-4 decision Monday to play Adamovic and Babic from Oklahoma State.

“We had some opportunities in the first set and just didn’t play the big points as confidently as we needed to,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “Later in the match, OSU played really well and things snowballed a little bit.”

Despite the loss Monday, the Jayhawk upperclassmen are seeing the improvement the team is making during the abbreviated fall season.

“We have improved a lot this fall since we got back on campus,” said Cardona. “We’ve been working really hard and that work paid off in this tournament.

“Overall, it was a solid tournament for our team,” added Chapman. “I feel like we are playing much better tennis than we were seven weeks ago.”

The Jayhawks will return to the practice courts before heading to Houston for the final fall tournament of the 2014-15 season. Kansas will play in the Houston Invitational Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in its fall finale.
