HOUSTON, Texas Kansas tennis swept the first round of doubles competition in Houston as the Jayhawks completed the first day of the Cougar Classic Friday at the University of Houston’s John E. Hoff Courts.

Kansas continued its success from the ITA Central Regionals as the squad went 7-2 in the first day of the Classic that included a 3-0 record in doubles play.

“I thought we had a really good day,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “I felt like we competed hard and played much more with the mindset of wanting to win and playing aggressive in those situations- that’s all I can ask for. Our goal is to put that kind of tennis together in back-to-back days and that will be our goal for tomorrow so we can come out and give ourselves a chance to win again.”

The KU doubles teams went undefeated in the round of 32, guaranteeing the three teams a spot in the round of 16 Saturday. The duo of Dylan Windom and Paulina Los shined for the Jayhawks in doubles play, downing Carolina Maso and Hanna Elfving of Lamar, 8-1. Maria Belen Ludueña and Maria Jose Cardona took down Malena Gordo and Andrea Ternera of Stephen F. Austin (8-5) while Anastasija Trubica and Claire Dreyer defeated Christine Ngo Gwodog and Sydney Thomas of Prairie View A&M (8-5).

In the round of 64, Trubica defeated Valeria Terentyeva of Stephen F. Austin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Dreyer made her return from sitting out the past month due to injury with a win over Rice’s Stephanie Nguyen, 6-3, 6-8. The winning continued with Windom who claimed a hard-fought victory over Shannon Beckett of Texas State (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). Cardona defeated Big 12 rival Samantha Adams of Texas Tech (6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6)). Los fell to Maria Andrea Cardenas of Houston (6-3, 7-6 (4)) and Ludueña was defeated by Rice’s Dominique Harmath (7-6(5), 6-2).

“They all performed well in different spots, in different ways whether it was singles or doubles, I felt like they all stepped up and did what they needed to do and played with more confidence than we have in the past. So that’s what we look to build upon,” said Chapman.

All three doubles teams will continue to the round of 16 Saturday, while the Trubica, Dreyer, Windom and Cardona will continue to the round of 32. Ludueña and Los will compete Saturday in the singles consolation rounds.
