HOUSTON, Texas After sitting out for five weeks due to injury, senior Claire Dreyer made an impressive return to match action as she continued to build her 4-0 win-streak on day two of the Cougar Classic. Dreyer and the Jayhawks completed the second day of the classic at the John E. Hoff Courts Saturday.

Dreyer and fellow senior Dylan Windom shined in their singles matches with both picking up a win. Dreyer downed Charlotte Phillips of Houston, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, and Windom defeated Rashmi Teltumbde of Big 12 rival, Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-4.

“Dylan and Claire had a great day,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “They played really tough tennis today, I couldn’t be more proud of either one of them, they both showed a lot of heart. Dylan hadn’t had the greatest fall and she’s really come around in this tournament and has started to play like I’ve seen her play in the past. And Claire coming off a five week layoff, and just practicing for a few days before coming to this tournament- she played some really good tennis.”

Sophomores Maria Jose Cardona and Anastasija Trubica both suffered defeats from the tournament’s host, Houston, in the main singles draw with Cardona falling to Elena Kordolaimi, 7-6, 6-4, and Trubica dropping to Tina Rupert, 6-3, 6-2.

Kansas was represented by Paulina Los and Maria Belen Ludueña in the consolation rounds. Los rolled past Laura Sevise of Stephen F. Austin, 6-0, 6-2 while Ludueña, who is battling an injury from Regionals two weeks ago, was unable to finish her match against Despoina Vogasari of Houston who won the first match 5-0 before Ludueña was forced to retire.

In doubles, Ludueña and Cardona continue on to their flight’s final after downing Elena Kordolaimi and Despoina Vogasari of Houston, 8-4. Trubica and Dreyer also earned their way to their flight’s final after defeating Houston’s Maria Andreas Cardenas and Rocio Martin, 8-2. Los and Windom fell to Charlotte Phillips and Tina Rupert of Houston in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (5).

“I felt like we played really well today,” said Chapman. “Cote (Cardona) and Belen (Ludueña) – they played probably as good as they played all fall. The same thing in the third flight with Claire and Nastya (Trubica) they played as good as they have all fall together. It’s exciting to see that and it will be exciting to see them play in the finals tomorrow in their flight. Hopefully we can do well and win.”

Tomorrow, Dreyer and Windom will continue on in the main singles draw  in the round of 16 while Los, Ludueña, Trubica and Cardona will continue singles play in the consolation round. In doubles, the teams of Ludueña and Cardona, and Dreyer and Trubica will continue play in the finals of their flights tomorrow.
