HOUSTON, Texas Senior Paulina Los and junior Maria Belen Ludueña led the Jayhawks in the final day of the Cougar Classic Sunday, as Kansas closes its 2013 fall season.

KU struggled on the final day of the tournament, as Ludueña and Los were the only Jayhawks to produce a win in their matches. Los swiftly defeated Stephen F. Austin’s Andrea Ternera, 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation round and Ludueña won a tough match against Polina Konop of Northwestern State, 7-5, 2-6, 11-9.

“I’m disappointed with the way we finished the tournament,” said head coach Todd Chapman. “We lost really close matches today. We had the opportunity to finish the day off strongly and fell a little flat on several occasions.”

In the main singles draw, seniors Dylan Windom and Claire Dreyer fell to their opponents in their respective flight’s final. Windom couldn’t hold on to her first set lead as her opponent, Rice’s Alison Ho, bounced back defeating Windom, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Dreyer fell to Arkansas’ Brittany Huxley, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Maria Jose Cardona participated in a consolation match against Ksenia Pronina of Big 12 rival Iowa State, where she won her first set but was unable to hold her opponent in the following sets and fell, 6-2, 1-6, 10-5.

“The silver lining is we competed hard at times,” said Chapman. “We just have to learn how to not have lapses at critical times during the match.

In the doubles, Cardona and Luduena were defeated by Texas Tech’s Kilgo and Adams in the final of their flight. Sophomore Anastasija Trubica and Dreyer also fell to their opponent in their flight’s final as Alicia Porte and Dariya Dashutina of Lamar took them in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (5). In the doubles consolations, Windom and Los lost to Rashmi Teltumbde and Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech, 8-5.

“Overall, it was a successful fall and the girls have a lot to be proud of,” said Chapman. “The team has come a long way. We now have to take the next step and work hard between now and the start of the spring season.”
