Kansas Stacks Up Fourth-Straight Week of Big 12 Awards
LAWRENCE, Kan. – A dominating start to the 2013 Big 12 Conference season pushed Kansas to a seven-match win streak and sophomore Tiana Dockery and redshirt senior Caroline Jarmoc led the way, chalking up the league’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.
The duo’s awards mark the fifth and sixth weekly recognitions for Kansas (11-3, 1-0) in the last four weeks. Just a week ago, two different Jayhawks were granted with Big 12 honors in senior Erin McNorton (Offensive) and freshman Tayler Soucie (Rookie). Senior libero Brianne Riley (Sept. 16) is also on the list as KU has already seen five different players recognized – a first for the Kansas squad in a single season.
“It’s great to see them earn honors like these and they deserve it,” head coach Ray Bechard said. “But, obviously, it goes back to our team having success and staying focused on each match. (Tiana) Dockery has certainly found a rhythm and (Caroline) Jarmoc’s blocking numbers are always impressive. We’re proud of them.”
This marks the second weekly award in Dockery’s career and the fifth for Jarmoc.
Settling in to her starting role on the outside, Dockery cranked out her third double-digit kill effort in KU’s last four matches on Saturday. In the Jayhawks’ Big 12 Conference opener, Dockery was a main role in the sweep of TCU. She led all players with 14 kills and committed just one error for a solid .406 attack percentage.
Her efforts helped KU hit .369 for the match and a blistering .667 in the second set – the second time this season that the Kansas offense hit .600 or better in a set this season.
Jarmoc put up her usual double-digit kill effort in KU’s sweep of TCU to open the Big 12 Conference season. She did her most damage, however, at the net. Jarmoc blocked eight attacks against the Horned Frogs to lead the floor and help KU double up TCU in team blocks (10.0-5.0). Her performance propelled her to third in the league in blocks per set (1.31).
At Kansas, Jarmoc continues to climb the career charts. With her solo block against TCU, she passed for KU great Josi Lima for second all-time in career solo rejections at KU. She is now second on all of KU’s career blocking lists: solo blocks (90, 2nd), block assists (393, 2nd) and total blocks (483, 2nd).
