Kansas Named to NCAA Host Watch List

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas is very much in the hunt to repeat its role of postseason host as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) named the Jayhawks to the 2013 NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament First and Second Round Host Watch List.

Ranked No. 24 on the Nov. 4 AVCA poll, Kansas (18-5, 8-2 Big 12) is one of 33 teams across the country to be recognized as possible host sites. The criteria to be on the watch list is as follows:

Teams in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll as of October 28, 2013.
Or
Teams in the top 25 of the Pablo Rankings as of October 28, 2013.
Or
Teams in the top 25 of the RPI Rankings as of October 28, 2013.
*Kansas met two of three prior to the Oct. 28 deadline

The NCAA moved Kansas to No. 17 in its latest RPI release (11/4), maintaining the Jayhawks’ spot in the top-20 in the RPI for the last two seasons. In 2013, only four teams have more top-100 RPI wins than KU’s 14: USC (16), Penn State (15), Florida (15) and Texas (15). Kansas has wins against Wisconsin (No. 13), Oklahoma (No. 19), Arizona (No. 27), Georgia (No. 31) and Arkansas (No. 34). More impressively, four of the Jayhawks’ six wins against top-50 opponents occurred on the road.

The NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee meets Nov. 29-Dec. 1 to choose the 64-team field.  The committee’s top 16 seeds have the option to host first-second round matches.

As hosts in 2012, a total of 8,029 fans watched the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Tournament inside historic Allen Fieldhouse. That marked last year’s highest attendance number for First and Second Round action among all the 16 host sites in the country.
