Morgan Tabbed Big 12’s Runner of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Redshirt freshman Grace Morgan earned Big 12 accolades Tuesday when she was named the conference’s Female Runner of the Week by the league office. The award is the first of Morgan’s career.

Morgan got her season off to a good start with her first-career victory as a Jayhawk at the Bob Timmons Classic on Saturday. The Lawrence native’s victory was never in doubt after she pulled away from the lead pack just over midway through the race and widened the gap between her and the rest of the field over the remaining 2,000 meters.

Morgan completed the 5K loop in 18:49.1, the fastest finish by a Jayhawk at the Bob Timmons Classic in four years. Her time was also just over 30 seconds faster than the runner-up, Oral Roberts’ Samantha Watson, who won the individual title at the same meet last year. Morgan’s performance helped lead the Jayhawks to the team title with dual victories over Oral Roberts and UMKC.

Morgan and her Jayhawk teammates will be back in action on Sept. 27 at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. The men’s 8K race will begin at 12:20 p.m., while the women’s 6K gun will go off at 1:10 p.m.
