Kansas prepares for 2019 season in Tampa
LAWRENCE, Kan. – As the 2019 season approaches, Kansas rowing is starting the New Year with its annual winter training trip for the next eight days at the Tampa River Center in Tampa, Florida.
The Jayhawks’ winter break from classes ends early each year as KU heads south to find warmer waters. Kansas will spend the next eight days training, bonding as a team and focusing on the upcoming season before the spring semester starts.
This season, a number of Jayhawks will give fans a unique and inside look at what happens on a daily basis during winter training.
With several winter training trips already completed in her career, senior Lilly Stewart will kick things off with the first blog from Tampa on Jan. 12. Following Stewart, freshman Jadyn Jay will give us her take on her first winter training on Jan. 13 and junior Reese Arnold will share her experiences as a veteran Jayhawk Jan. 14, as this isn’t the first time down to Tampa for Arnold.
Get a coxswain point-of-view with sophomore Raven Swingler on Jan. 15. Moving into the second half of winter training, sophomore London Acree and freshman Lillian Thomas will share their thoughts on Jan. 16 and 17, respectively. Sophomore Laurel Salisbury will begin to wrap up winter training on Jan. 18 and junior Isabel Horosz will close it out on Jan. 20.
Once winter training is completed, KU will open the 2019 season with a scrimmage in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday, March 2.
The Cooper Sprints will be KU’s first regatta of the year on Sunday, March 24, in Cooper River Park, New Jersey. The Jayhawks will compete against Duke, North Carolina, Villanova and Big 12 foes Oklahoma and West Virginia, among other schools from around the country.
KU will head east twice during the month of April, as the Jayhawks compete in the Sunshine State Invite April 5-6. While in Sarasota, Florida, Kansas will face in-state rival, Kansas State, along with others.
In their second trip east, the Jayhawks will compete at the George Mason Invite on Sunday, April 14. This marks the third-straight year that Kansas has raced on the Occoquan Reservoir in Virginia. Last year, Kansas brought home gold medals in the First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four finals to lead the Big 12 Conference to victory over the Atlantic 10 Conference and the Colonial Athletic Association for the second year in a row.
The Jayhawks look to bring the Kansas Cup back to Lawrence as KU hosts the Wildcats for the annual Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Saturday, May 4, at Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kansas.
For the fifth-consecutive year, Oak Ridge, Tennessee will play host to the Big 12 Championship May 18-19, where the Jayhawks will be looking to finish the season strong.
