Folds of Honor

At select Kansas games, a Folds of Honor scholarship recipient attending KU will be recognized. Folds of Honor provides life changing scholarships to the families of American Heroes who protect our freedoms and our families. November 23rd, 2024, KU vs. Colorado: Cassie and Aiden Muhlbauer
Cassie and Aiden Muhlbauer are the proud wife and son of fallen Police Officer James Muhlbauer, who proudly served his community for 20 years. He started his career with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department in 2002. During his time with the department, he worked at Metro Patrol, then North Patrol, and finally moved to the Canine Section. Officer Muhlbauer and his partner, K-9 Officer Champ, were killed in the line of duty on February 15, 2023.
November 9th, 2024, KU vs Iowa State: Lieutenant Colonel Dan Rooney
Lieutenant Colonel Dan Rooney is a decorated F-16 Fighter Pilot and the founder of Folds of Honor. Since its inception in 2007, the foundation has provided nearly 62,000 life-changing scholarships totaling about $290 million. Lt Col Rooney participated in 3 combat tours to Iraq where he flew the F-16 Viper, and was stationed at Headquarters Air Force Recruiting Service in San Antonio-Randolph, TX, where he acted as a US Air Force ambassador with the task of inspiring the next generation of service members.
Rooney is a two-time recipient of the Top Gun award and has received the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Anti-Terrorism Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, and Air Expeditionary Medal. For his service and patriotism, he was presented with the White House’s Presidential Volunteer Service Award by President George W. Busch, as well as the Air National Guard’s Distinguished Service Medal, the Director’s Service Award, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Lt Col Rooney currently lives in Owasso, Oklahoma with his wife and five daughters.
October 19th, 2024, KU vs. Houston: Colleen and Everett Katzenberger
Colleen Katzenberger married United States Army Staff Sergeant, Jeremy Katzenberger, on April 30th, 2005, at the age of 19. After she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in nursing, they decided it was time to expand their family. Even though SSG Katzenberger was deployed in October 2010, the Army allowed him to return home for the birth of their son, Everett. Only a few months later in 2011, Colleen and Everett lost Jeremy while he was deployed in Afghanistan.
In 2015, both Colleen and Everett became Folds of Honor scholarship recipients. Colleen graduated with a Master of Education degree from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. She currently works as a high school teacher for the Park Hill School District. Everett continues to excel in many areas and enjoys science, Boy Scouts, and golf. Despite their loss, Colleen and Everett continue to honor the legacy of their hero.
September 28th, 2024, KU vs TCU: Isabella Souza
Isabella Souza is currently a student at the University of Kansas, and is originally from Lawrence, KS. She is an English major with a psychology minor, and is pre-law as well. After graduation, she would like to continue her education by pursuing her master’s degree and then her doctorate. In her free time, she enjoys tutoring K-12, volunteering, playing piano, and reading.
Isabella is the proud daughter of United States Army Sergeant First Class Brian Johnson, who served our country for 9 years. He specialized as a fire fighter and was deployed to the Iraqi campaign.
September 13th, 2024, KU vs UNLV: Bergen Mauerhan
Bergan Mauerhan is currently a 3rd year doctoral student at the University of Kansas Medical Center and is originally from Prairie Village, Kansas. She is specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology and her goal after graduation is to become an OBGYN.
She is the proud daughter of Navy Commander, Todd Mauerhan, who served our country for 16 years. His years of service included the following: “Cold War Nuclear Deterrent Ballistic Missile Submarine Deployments (7) in 3rd Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR), Operation Desert Storm in 3rd Fleet AOR, POTUS Support Operations in 3rd, 5th, and 7thFleet AORS, Pakistan Humanitarian Assistance Operation Iraqi Freedom in 5th Fleet AOR, Operation Enduring Freedom in 5th Fleet AOR, Operation Southern Watch in 5thand 7th Fleet AORS, Operation Scimitar Hawk in 5th Fleet AOR, Operation Copper Dune in 5th Fleet AOR, and multiple TS/SCI classified operations designated “Vital to National Security.”
