LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks had two student-athletes claim Big 12 weekly honors on Thursday, as junior Shiyun Lai was named Big 12 Women's Diver of the Week, while Sammy Cummins earned Women's Newcomer of the Week award, as announced by the conference office.
This marks the ninth time Lai has been awarded this distinction in her three-year career with the Jayhawks and the first time a freshman has won this accolade for the Kansas swimming team since December of the 2024-2025 season.
With Lai's dominate performance on the boards at last week's meet against South Dakota, she still holds the record for receiving this weekly award as the most decorated athlete in Kansas diving program's history. Lai placed first in both her respective events with a score of 382.95 in the three-meter dive on Friday night and a score of 332.85 in the one-meter dive on Saturday afternoon.
Cummins also excelled in her respective events against South Dakota, including scoring first, as well as posting a personal best time of 2:00.51 in the 200-yard butterfly and helping her team place first in the 800-yard freestyle relay with an overall time of 7:24.26.
Shiyun and Sammy both had big meets last weekend, said head coach Clark Campbell. It's such an honor being recognized by the conference for their achievements and is really a credit to the entire team on how well we competed.
